WHAT IS SKIN CANCER?
Skin cancer is a disease that develops when skin cells grow abnormally. There are three major types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Seasoned dermatologist Dr. Jay Mehta is highly trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. If you've noticed any changes in your skin or have a family history of skin cancer, we encourage you to schedule a skin cancer screening at Arizona Skin Institute in Surprise, AZ near Phoenix.
HOW IS SKIN CANCER DIAGNOSED?
The first step to attaining a proper diagnosis is to meet with a licensed medical professional. At Arizona Skin Institute, Dr. Meta will perform a full skin assessment to identify any areas of concern. In some cases, he may order blood work and perform a biopsy on a skin lesion to determine whether it's cancerous or benign. Educating yourself on the signs and symptoms to look out for is also essential for the early detection of skin cancer. You should become familiar with your skin and what is normal and abnormal for you. As a guideline, use the ABCDE guide for self-exams:
Asymmetry: each half of a birthmark or mole should match or be symmetrical.
Border: irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred edges should be checked by a doctor.
Color: different colors or shades within a spot may be cause for concern.
Diameter: spots over 6 mm across should be checked by a doctor.
Evolving: the spot changing in size, shape, or color over time could indicate skin cancer.
Other warning signs of skin cancer include:
- Chronic itching, tenderness, or pain
- A pigment that spreads from a spot to surrounding normal skin
- Redness or swelling of the skin
- Skin wounds and sores that do not heal
Once we've completed a comprehensive skin exam and all your test results are back, we will schedule a follow-up exam so Dr. Mehta can go over your results. From there, he can discuss the next steps. At Arizona Skin Institute, we offer a wide variety of treatment options. Your treatment will be selected depending on the type, location, and severity of your skin cancer. We understand that skin cancer can be scary, but it's often very treatable, and our caring team is here to walk you through the treatment process from start to finish. We invite you to read our skin cancer treatment page to learn about the different therapies we offer.
